This is the first episode of Radio Free Geneva that has been put on Youtube. The purpose of RFG is to dispel the many caricatures, straw men, and misrepresentations that those who are opposed to Reformed Theology (ie. Calvinism) normally make when critiquing the other side. Lord willing, there will be more in the future that deal with different subjects. Ergun Caner delivered a sermon a few years ago called "Why I am Predestined Not to be a Hyper-Calvinist." However, many Reformed folk thought the sermon would have been more aptly titled "Why I am Not Predestined to Represent the Side I am Critiquing Accurately." In this episode of Radio Free Geneva, James White deals with the many straw men and mischaracterizations that Ergun Caner promoted during this sermon and rectifies them. This episode is especially helpful because many of the arguments Caner brought up are many of the same that are brought up regularly by opponents of the doctrines of grace. Start with 10/6/06 "Regarding the Lynchburg Situation" and work your way up.: http://www.aomin.org/aoblog/index.php?blogid=1&archive=2006-10 Here is some written correspondance between Ergun Caner and James White: http://vintage.aomin.org/ErgunCaner1.html Tom Ascol, who was going to be James White's debate partner in this debate commented on it on Founder's Blog, as well: http://www.founders.org/blog/2006/05/update-on-caner-debate.html http://www.founders.org/blog/2006/06/update-2-on-caner-debate.html Here, Ascol comments on the sermon presented in this edition of RFG.: http://www.founders.org/blog/2006/06/ergun-caner-on-predestined-not-to-be.html Finally, here's a link that discusses logical fallacies. I figured it would be very helpful considering the nature of this video.: http://www.logicalfallacies.info/ The Alpha and Omega graphics used in this video were made by Micah Burke (klockheed on Youtube). Great job, Micah! You can hear Caner's sermon in its entirety here: http://trbc.org/new/christianresources/media_player.php?id=11 http://www.aomin.org http://www.lanechaplin.com

Aug 27, 2008 - I treated Calvinism as evil until I was born again and actually read the Bible. What I did not get was that: 1. Salvation is above timeline. Being born again is an event (that will occure acording to God's foreknowledge and purpose) but you were destined to be saved before the world began. 2. The only person who knows elect is God. We do not know who they are. That is the linking point towards 'falling away' - it speaks about the saints (Paul was aware there was a mixture in churches)

masterowa diyorki:

Aug 27, 2008 - 2b. We just misinterpret 'falling away'. It is not 'loosing salvation' because if you are elect who goes a bit astray (which was predestined from the beginning as well) you WILL come back. Some people will ask 'What if person would die before coming back?' God is not surprised by death, he rules over it and it will happen in the time he designed it to. 3. Bible is really perfect. I have never seen anything so full and so glorious as theology in the bible. It doesn't contradicts itself

masterowa diyorki:

Aug 27, 2008 - and as always we forget that it is not a decision that leads us to Christ. When I grasped at least a bit theology from the Bible I realized that no unbeliever would be pleased by it. That without God's work in him he would NEVER decide to follow God. If one is an elect God has already foreknew and predestined his new birth in all of it (we have no influence here) and after that he will LOVE the theology expressed in the Bible. We fight for truth, not compromise it to please the world.

masterowa diyorki:

Aug 27, 2008 - exactly. people seem to skip the fact that 'truth will set you free'. Nothing else. Bible is first and foremost to seek instructions, not to have topics to share opinions on. And we have to seek the truth. If we compromise the truth for the sake of 'loving brothers' we have no idea what Love is.

LaneCh diyorki:

Aug 27, 2008 - Please explain how rejecting Jesus is not rejecting God.

AChildOfTheLight diyorki:

Aug 28, 2008 - GenREv 1611---you make a laughing stock out of yourself already,by condoning these videos,& battering others.Who do you serve? Man or God? Those who truly profess & know Gods Word & His Love, wouldn't be labeling themselves after a mere man.If you want to go back to the beginning, why not call yourself a Paulinist? You keep focusing your attention on mans interpretation of scriptures & not the teachings of Christ Himself, & if I was around back then,I would steer clear of all you hypocrites!

LaneCh diyorki:

Aug 28, 2008 - Are you a man (or a woman, either/or), "AChildOfTheLight"?

IpsaPaphum diyorki:

Aug 28, 2008 - The simplest answer is also the most personal. I'm not a Christian but I don't reject God. Jesus is God become Man, but God is not exhausted in one expression. The whole creation expresses His glory and the Ghost bloweth where it listeth.

BesACB diyorki:

Aug 28, 2008 - The sin against the son may be forgiven, the sin against the Holy Ghost is damning.

BesACB diyorki:

Aug 28, 2008 - Besides, is God going to reject an honest Muhammadan who is leading a Godfearing life, trusting in God, the Merciful, the Compassionate, having been taught from early childhood that Jesus is 'just' a prophet? I don't think so.

cadmancan diyorki:

Aug 28, 2008 - Calvin taught waht Luther taught, what Augistine taught, what PAUL taught, what Jesus taught. Jesus said I chose you, you did not chose me.

LaneCh diyorki:

Aug 28, 2008 - Yes, he will. There is no other name under heaven under which man can be saved. It doesn't matter if the person was taught lies from 5 months old or 5 minutes ago, if they believe those lies, that fault rests on them. Jesus Christ is the Son of God and has come in the flesh. If ANYONE rejects him, they're damned eternally.

BesACB diyorki:

Aug 28, 2008 - That's a dark thought. It cannot but cloud your soul.

LaneCh diyorki:

Aug 28, 2008 - No, it's the truth, and it is light. Christ can save your soul.

jesusfollower4 diyorki:

Sep 5, 2008 - Dont be lazy find out why the Bible is infalible and Jesus Christ of biblical revelation is absolute and no other interpetation of salvation. 300 messianic prophesise that can be proven absolute came to pass. The Bible has thousands more ancient manuskripts than any other writings in history.

excatholics diyorki:

Sep 5, 2008 - This wasn't a debate, more of a critique.......

LaneCh diyorki:

Sep 5, 2008 - It wasn't asserted as a debate. It was set forth as two men explaining their views of Calvinism.

excatholics diyorki:

Sep 5, 2008 - "Ergun Caner vs. James White on Calvinism," sure sounded like a debate.....

LaneCh diyorki:

Sep 5, 2008 - "Wakeman vs. Wheeler" I guess court cases sound like that, too, huh? :)

excatholics diyorki:

Sep 5, 2008 - Please don't be silly and facetious. Just admit your title was a little misleading, correct it and we can move on.

LaneCh diyorki:

Sep 5, 2008 - Um... it's a valid point. Do you view court cases as debates between two people? If not, why not? (I grant that you do care about being consistent, of course.)

excatholics diyorki:

Sep 5, 2008 - This is my final comment to you. A court case, this is not. Your title, for the last time, needs either amending, or a note put up telling folks that James is simply responding to Ergun's pre-recorded comments and nothing else. Over and out.....

LaneCh diyorki:

Sep 5, 2008 - Ah, so consistency isn't really an important issue for you. Isn't it strange that no one else has had this problem with this video title? Could it be that it's only you that inferred something that was not intended from the title, and now you are seeking to blame another for your shortcoming? I've had this video up since July 20th, yet you're the only person who has "been mislead" by the title. Is that not strange? I believe in owning up to my mistakes but not those of other people.

LaneCh diyorki:

Sep 5, 2008 - Let's say you were presented something to read called "Plessy vs. Ferguson". Let's say you opened it up thinking you would find a debate, but instead you found a court case. Would you then say, "Oh, my fault. I thought this was a debate before I read it." or would you say, "Hey, this is your fault. The title is misleading. I opened up this thing to read and found a court case. Change the title."? If you'd say the former, why the double standard with the title of this video?

KarensFaith diyorki:

Sep 7, 2008 - Thanks for this, Lane. I learned a lot listening to it. God bless!
